  18. I hope that I can get some help from the collective wisdom on this list.
  19. I'm not really a TeX user, just a TeX installer, and don't know much
  20. about Metafont at all.

  22. I recently installed TeX/LaTeX, xdvik and dvipsk on my site.  Everything
  23. was mostly fine until I pulled over musictex to install.  This gave
  24. me a reason to really checkout MakeTeXPK because none of the pk fonts
  25. were on the system.

  27. It gave me some trouble.

  29. First gripe I have with the package is that the version of xdvi I had
  30. installed on my previous version would run MakeTeXPK.  So it's kind of
  31. annoying that I have to run dvips to make the fonts for xdvi to use.
  32.  
  33. The second gripe is more of a question now that I got something to work.
  34. Xdvik needed 300pk fonts and MakeTeXPK would make only 600dpi and above
  35. when I ran dvipsk.  So I finally changed two lines in the dvips/config.ps
  36. file to default to 300 dpi and to set the metafont mode to CannonCX rather
  37. than ljfour.  This seems to make something xdvik can live with and it
  38. doesn't seem to make a difference in output.  But it does look like
  39. the MakeTeXPK script or the mf program isn't quite "there" since the
  40. script doesn't seem to override the MF mode.

  42. Can some kind soul explain to me the reason for the different modes and
  43. whether or not I'm going to be bitten by something here?  Our main
  44. printer is an HP Laserjet 4si which can print 600 or 300 dpi output.
  45. In the faculty office areas we use old Apple LaserWriters which are 300dpi.
  46. I'm just looking for reassurance that I can blow away my old version
  47. after my users check out their tex/latex sources on it (and hopefully
  48. some explanation of what's going on).
